Guidelines for Living

“Our lives are not determined by what happens to us but by how we react to what happens,

not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life.” – Anonymous

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” Proverbs 4:23

Would you describe yourself as positive, motivated, enthusiastic, dependable, trustworthy? Now ask yourself this question: Is that how other people see me? Most people think their attitude is OK so when conflict-related problems arise they conclude that it is the other person who is at fault.

The reality is that, despite our good intentions, it’s easy to let events drag us down. We’re not always at our best - but we always need to strive to press toward the mark (Philippians 3:13,14). Therefore we all need to take charge of keeping our heart. Here are some ideas and actions for doing just that.

1. Do it now – don’t wait until you are in the dumps before doing something about it.

2. Diligently – build upon the firm foundation of the values found in the Word of God. Your thoughts are determined by your values, which lead to actions. Remind yourself regularly of what God states is important to you.

3. Deliberately – take time out to refill your emotional fuel tank!

4. Determine to find outcomes to be hopeful about. As believers we have a hope that sustains a good attitude when facing difficulties. Start by identifing at least one potentially positive outcome for the specific challenge you’re facing. List two or three things that will enable you to achieve that outcome, then get to work on getting it done.
